Gorilla to become mascot as World Vegan Day nears

One of the world's strongest animals, the gorilla, is set to become mascot for the World Vegan Day 2009 festival in Melbourne, to be held at the Abbotsford Convent on November 1st.

The gorilla, which can weigh between 75 - 180 kilograms, lives on an herbivorous diet but is known to have upper body strength at least six times greater than that of humans. Event organisers are said to be impressed by its strength and ability to live harmoniously with the natural world.

Event Coordinator Mark Doneddu said, "Adopting a vegan diet is the single most effective thing that you can do to improve your health and the environment.

Like the gorilla a human performs at its best on a plant-based diet. We need to look no further than Carl Lewis, Martina Navratilova and Dave Scott for proof."

This year's event also marks 65 years since Englishman Donald Watson coined the term "vegan".

The festivities on the day will feature an array of live music, vegan food and information stalls, cooking demonstrations and raffles, as well as speed-dating sessions and talks from notable speakers such as Paul Crossley and Bruce Poon.

The worldwide event celebrates the growing awareness of more ethically, environmentally and health-conscious lifestyle choices.

"World Vegan Day is an opportunity for people to learn about a diet and lifestyle that is the most ethical, environmentally-conscious and healthy", said Mr. Doneddu.

Melbourne's celebrations will coincide with similar events held worldwide.
